Between the Sassi and the Metaponto plain
The province of Matera combines the city of the Sassi, a UNESCO site and tourist destination, with the Metapontino plain, where fruit, vegetables, strawberries and citrus are grown, many of them for export. On the upland works the Murgia upholstered furniture district, and the Ionian coast between Metaponto and Policoro lives on summer tourism. Matera bread has protected status.
