Trieste lives on its free port, linked by rail to Central European markets, and on a long trading tradition: Generali and illy are headquartered here, and coffee is a whole supply chain, from import to roasting. The university, SISSA, ICTP, Area Science Park and the Elettra synchrotron make it a city of research.
